Mummy Rice Krispies Treat Recipe
Mummy Rice Krispies Treats are honestly one of my favorite snacks to whip up for Halloween. They look adorable, taste sweet, and come together in no time.
You just take regular Rice Krispies squares and turn them into cute little mummies with some melted white chocolate and candy eyes.
If you’re after a simple, fun Halloween dessert, you might want to give this recipe a shot.

Why I Love Them
Mummy Rice Krispies Treats are so easy. I don’t need to be a pro baker—just mix, shape, and decorate.
Honestly, I just love how they look. Those little mummy faces crack me up every time.
They’re great for sharing at Halloween parties or just having around for a fun snack at home. The taste is sweet but not over-the-top.
That combo of buttery marshmallows and crispy cereal? It’s a classic for a reason.
Equipment
For Mummy Rice Krispies Treats, I just grab a few basic tools. Here’s what I use:
- Large mixing bowl (needs to hold at least 6 cups of Rice Krispies)
- Medium saucepan (for melting 3 tablespoons of butter and 4 cups of mini marshmallows)
- 9×13-inch baking pan (perfect for spreading out the mixture)
I usually line the pan with parchment paper or give it a quick spray with cooking spray. No one wants sticky treats stuck to the pan.
For shaping and decorating, I keep these handy:
- Rubber spatula (for mixing and spreading)
- Sharp knife or pizza cutter (to cut treats into rectangles)
- Microwave-safe bowl (for melting about 1 cup of white chocolate chips)
- Spoon or piping bag (to drizzle the melted chocolate for the “bandages”)
- Candy eyes (about 24, depending on how many treats you make)
If I want easy cleanup, I keep some paper towels close by. Makes things way less messy.
Ingredients
When I make these, I stick to simple, easy-to-find ingredients. Here’s what goes in:
Main Ingredients:
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 package (10 oz) mini marshmallows
- 6 cups Rice Krispies cereal
That’s the base—just melt the butter and marshmallows, stir in the cereal, and you’re set.
For Decoration:
- 1 cup white chocolate chips (for the mummy “bandages”)
- Candy eyeballs (about 24, for 12 treats)
I use white chocolate chips for drizzling, and the candy eyeballs really bring those mummies to life.
Optional:
- Cooking spray or a little extra butter for greasing hands or the pan
- Parchment paper to keep things from sticking
I like to have everything measured out before I start. Marshmallows set up fast, so it’s good to be ready.
Instructions
First, I melt 3 tablespoons of butter in a large saucepan over low heat. Then I toss in one 10-ounce bag of mini marshmallows and stir until it’s all melted and smooth.
Once that’s done, I take the pan off the heat and gently mix in 6 cups of Rice Krispies. I make sure every bit of cereal is coated in that gooey marshmallow goodness.
I press the mixture into a greased 13×9-inch pan. Usually I use wax paper or a buttered spatula so it doesn’t stick to my hands.
After the treats cool, I cut them into rectangles. I melt about 1 cup of white chocolate chips in the microwave, stirring every 20 seconds so it doesn’t burn.
I scoop the melted chocolate into a piping bag or even just a sandwich bag with the tip snipped off. Then I drizzle it back and forth over each rectangle so it looks like mummy bandages.
While the chocolate is still soft, I gently press two candy eyeballs onto each treat. That’s the best part, honestly.

Substitute
Sometimes I run out of things or just want to mix it up a little. Here are some swaps I’ve tried for Mummy Rice Krispies Treats:
- Marshmallows: If I’m out, I use 1 cup of mini marshmallows for every 10 large ones. For dairy-free, vegan marshmallows work fine.
- Butter: Same amount of margarine or coconut oil works. I’ve even used 3 tablespoons of unsweetened applesauce for a lighter version.
- Rice cereal: No Rice Krispies? I’ll use another crispy rice cereal or even cornflakes if that’s all I have.
If I need these treats to be gluten-free, I just use gluten-free puffed rice and double-check all my other ingredients. Sometimes I’ll add a teaspoon of vanilla extract or toss in some chocolate chips for a change.
For a nutty twist, I mix in a quarter cup of peanut butter with the marshmallows and butter. Why not?
Original Ingredient | Substitute | Amount |
---|---|---|
Marshmallows | Vegan marshmallows | 10 large or 1 cup mini |
Butter | Coconut oil or margarine | 3 tablespoons |
Rice cereal | Gluten-free puffed rice or cornflakes | 6 cups |
What Can Go Wrong?
Sometimes my marshmallows melt unevenly. When that happens, I end up with lumps or even burnt spots in the treats.
If I pack the mixture into the pan too tightly, my Mummy Rice Krispies Treats turn out hard. I honestly just press gently with a spatula now and hope for the best.
Letting the treats sit around too long before decorating? That’s another headache. The surface dries out pretty fast, and then candy eyes just refuse to stick.
Problem | What Causes It | How I Fix It |
---|---|---|
Treats are too hard | Pressing too hard | Use light pressure |
Won’t stick together | Not enough marshmallow or butter | Measure ingredients carefully |
Melted chocolate is lumpy | Overheating chocolate | Melt slowly, stir often |
Adding too many decorations gets things messy in a hurry. I usually stick with just a couple candy eyes and the bare minimum of melted chocolate.
It’s surprisingly easy to forget to line the pan with parchment paper. When I skip it, the treats stick and are a pain to get out.
And, honestly, sometimes I get impatient and don’t let the treats cool enough before cutting. If I rush, they fall apart or end up looking pretty uneven.
